Star of Eger tour

Eger’s medieval castle is the only castle in Hungary that was able to defeat the turkish again. A famous roman tells the story of the 16th century-battle through the eyes of a young boy and girl, spiced with a lot of adventure. This book is compulsory in school and so Eger is the first aim for school excursions. Not only its medieval castle and charming baroque steets attracts the visitors but also the high gastronomy and wine culture as well.

Eger wine region is located on the southern slopes of the Bükk Mountains, based mostly on riolit tufa. The most common grape varieties are Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Leányka (literary translation: little girl), Blaufrankish, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Kadarka. The famous red blend Bull’s Blood is produced here. According to the legend, the name Bull’s Blood comes from the time of the Turkish’s siege. Turkish soldiers thought that bull’s blood was mixed into the red wine as otherwise the strenght resistence of the castle could not be explained.

We pick up you at your hotel in the morning hours, at 8.30am. Our driver get us in Eger within 1h30 minutes approximately. We start immediately with a wine- and local cheese tasting in a hospitable and green courtyard of family owned winery.

We take a walk in the old town of Eger and we visit Hungary's second largest Catholic church, the northernmost minaret of the former Turkish Empire, the medieval castle of Eger and many more little secrets what is not writen in the guidebook.

After the three course lunch, we will continue our exploration of Eger's wine region in one of the most most rewarded wine cellar.

Towards the end of the afternoon, we will head back to Budapest.
